St. George Parish History
The story of St. George Greek Orthodox Church of Yonkers is one of faith, generosity, and perseverance.
Before our parish had a home of its own, the Greek Orthodox Church of Our Saviour graciously opened its doors, welcoming our early community and allowing us to worship within their sacred space. Their hospitality provided the spiritual foundation and stability our fledgling parish needed as we worked toward establishing a permanent home in Yonkers.
As the years passed, more Christian Arab immigrants settled in the area, and the growing community worked tirelessly to organize services and cultivate a vibrant place for worship and fellowship. Within ten years, the faithful gathered to hold their first religious services together and were soon incorporated and chartered—marking the official beginning of the parish.
As the parish continued to expand, A church was eventually purchased and reconstructed, dedicated, and continues to serve as our beloved house of worship to this day.
A profound milestone in our parish's spiritual journey took place on October 12, 2024, when His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America presided over the Divine Liturgy of Consecration at St. George Orthodox Church, sealing its sacred purpose for generations to come. Another historic moment followed in January 2026, when St. George received its official charter from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, affirming its place within the wider Archdiocesan family.
From humble beginnings to a vibrant present, our parish has grown into a strong and welcoming spiritual community. Throughout every decade, St. George has remained steadfast in bearing faithful witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as lived, and proclaimed through the apostolic tradition and worship of the Greek Orthodox Church.
We warmly invite you to join us in prayer, fellowship, and service, and to share in the ongoing life and spiritual journey of our parish.
Welcome home to St. George Greek Orthodox Church.
